Zhōng Xīn was created at the same time as the solo, In Search of the Holy Chop Suey. Both were made using the same proposition of – what if each dancer worked from the same map but didn’t know that? Where and what would you end up with? What would be the points of divergence and convergence? For the creation of Zhōng Xīn, Luke, Mairéad and Irvin worked individually with Yvonne and in isolation from each other about a year, creating the movement with me and working on that same question – what if you have the same map? The question of where identity resides and how someone else’s presence influences one’s identity. After working apart, the 3 performers came together, and we exploited the subtle shifts in how each performer’s presence affected that of the others. Each performance has an element of spontaneous composition by the performers reflecting the reality that the “self” is not a static thing.
Zhōng Xīn – translates from Mandarin to centre or core.
