Fading Shadows/Returning Echoes
I was thinking a bit about the work that we will be performing at the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival; Dominique Dumais’ Fading Shadows/Returning Echoes which was created for Robert and I back in 2004. Robert and I both love Dominique’s work and when we were thinking of choreographers to commission for a new duet, we felt she would be a good fit for us. We asked, she said yes, and the rest as they say, is history. Dominique’s works are physically and emotionally charged – and this shines through in Fading Shadows/Returning Echoes. I admire her works for the depth and sophistication that emerges in the simplicity of her choreographic ideas and design. Thinking back to the creation period, I remember that she looked to us as collaborating artists, allowing us to infuse our artistry into her work and I think that this is part of the reason that has made the piece so enduring. Robert and I have continued to perform it since it was created and we are both always amazed by how much we learn from each other and the work each time we remount and perform it. I’m looking forward to what the performance at the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival will bring. 16 days and counting…
